Students from Vitebsk secondary school No. 8 helped find the remains of 132 soldiers near the village of Navorotye, Liozno district
How the children of the patriotic detachment “Prometheus” of Vitebsk secondary school No. 8 helped find the remains of 132 soldiers near the village of Navorotye, Liozny district, who died during the Great Patriotic War.
It all started with the fact that the guys are members of the patriotic squad “Prometheus” of secondary school No. 8 named after. A. Ispenkova, asked me to teach them how to read topographic maps linked to the modern terrain,” says the team leader, Dmitry Gantman. – At the next lesson, a copy of an aerial photograph for 1944 of a section of the area near Vitebsk was on hand. When they began to compare the data of one and another card using a special application on a smartphone, then...
“Dmitry Sergeevich, look, here right next to the road there are hills in a row, like in a cemetery, but on the modern map there is no graveyard, only a forest,” they were dumbfounded.
“Indeed, the sharp eyes of the children spotted the burial places on the poor copy of the 1944 map. They started to figure it out. With the help of archival documents, it turned out that in this place at the end of 1943 - beginning of 1944 there was the 13th Motorized Rifle Brigade (separate medical battalion) of the 17th Guards Rifle Dukhovshchinsky Division, which on December 19, 1943, with the support of the 28th Tank Brigade, went to attack on the enemy,” continued Dmitry Gantman. – I transferred the information to the international search association “Western Frontier”. Just the other day, the head of this association, Valery Kuzmin, together with soldiers of the 52nd search battalion of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Belarus, completed search work near the village of Navarotye (this is at the border of the Vitebsk and Liozny districts), in the place indicated by the students of school No. 8. Here the search engines found the remains of 132 Red Army soldiers who died heroically during the liberation of Vitebsk and our native Belarus. The remains of the heroes, after a detailed study, will be reburied with honors.
