Belarus and Nigeria sign policy document on cooperation in agriculture

An action plan to strengthen the partnership in agriculture and food security between the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security of Nigeria and the Government of Belarus for 2024-2029 was signed. During the ceremony, which took place on 7 June at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Minsk, the document was signed by First Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Belarus Sergei Lukashevich and Federal Minister of Agriculture and Food Security of the Federal Republic of Nigeria Abubakar Shaib Kyari, BelTA has learned.

The document, according to Sergei Lukashevich, was adopted in the development of the agreements that were reached during the minister's visit to Belarus, and provides for a number of specific steps that will increase mutual trade and help Nigeria gain food independence. We are talking, in particular, about the supply of domestically produced food and equipment to the Nigerian market.

"Nigeria is the largest country in West Africa and our largest partner (in this region - BelTA), there is even a Belarusian foreign mission there," the first deputy foreign minister said. "The efforts of the Belarusian side, according to him, are aimed at full-scale entry into the market of this region, to fully implement the tasks set by the government and the head of state.

"In a recent message (congratulatory message - BelTA) on the occasion of Africa Day, Alexander Lukashenko noted that Belarus is ready to contribute to the renaissance of the African continent. This is what we are doing today, - said Sergei Lukashevich. "I really hope that the minister and his team will remember Belarus exactly as it is - hospitable, open and always ready to help, to lend a shoulder."

As reported, the Nigerian delegation headed by Abubakar Shaib Kyari was in Belarus for several days, getting acquainted with the country's potential, primarily in the field of industry and agriculture. Foreign guests, in particular, visited the Belagro exhibition and some enterprises.

As the Nigerian minister noted in an interview with reporters, his country is interested in absolutely everything related to agriculture in Belarus: "Here, in Belarus, we see that you have a huge amount of agricultural equipment, very modern machines that are interesting for us, and therefore we want to bring them to our agriculture in order to increase yields and productivity."

According to him, the issue of ensuring food security is particularly relevant for Nigeria. "In this regard, we are interested in establishing friendly contacts with countries in resolving issues of providing appropriate technologies, mechanization, equipment. Belarus is known in the world for the quality of its equipment. And we want to take advantage of these opportunities," Abubakar Shaib Kyari emphasized.

Belarus, in turn, proposes not to limit itself to simple exports to Nigeria, but to build long-term partnerships on mutually beneficial terms. The implementation of complex projects is seen as promising. If we talk about industry, then this can be not only the supply of equipment, but also the provision of spare parts, service and warranty maintenance, training of local specialistsoperation and repair of equipment. In the future, it is also possible to develop Nigeria's own production base. Currently, the Belarusian side is working on the first pilot project for the mechanization of agriculture in this country. There are agreements on the supply of a batch of tractors, attachments for cultivating the land (harrows, plows), seeders, combines, etc.
