Foreign ministers of Belarus, Russia discuss security guarantees agreement

Belarusian Minister of Foreign Affairs Maksim Ryzhenkov and Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs Sergey Lavrov discussed the work on the agreement on security guarantees during their meeting in Minsk on 31 October, BelTA has learned.

Speaking about the development of bilateral relations, Maksim Ryzhenkov said that there were no urgent issues on the agenda.

“We need to prepare well for the meeting of the Supreme State Council of the Belarus-Russia Union State and the celebration of the 25th anniversary of the signing of the Union State Treaty.  There are a number of documents that are very important from the point of view of ensuring the security of the Union State. Therefore, there is a lot of work to be done. I am grateful to Russia that we find understanding on all the points we face in the preparation of basic documents, the agreement on security guarantees,” the Belarusian diplomat said.

The ministers also discussed the ongoing 2nd Minsk International Conference on Eurasian Security. “In the future, we will use the results and best practices to prepare a charter of diversity and multipolarity in the 21st century,” Maksim Ryzhenkov said.

Russian partners also took an active part in the preparation of the conference. Sergey Lavrov expressed the hope that the discussions would help fill this charter with concrete practical content. “We will actively support this work,” he added.

As BelTA reported earlier, in July, on the sidelines of the SCO summit, Maksim Ryzhenkov told the media that Belarus and Russia continued to discuss the draft agreement on security guarantees. “There will be several more rounds of negotiations. The deputy minister of foreign affairs [of Russia] is expected to visit us. Everything is going according to the schedule,” the minister said.
