Lukashenko sees Ukraine as drug addict kept on short leash with promises of new weapons

The coalition of Western countries has converted Ukraine into a drug addict, who is kept on a short leash with promises of a new dose of additional weapons and financial infusions. Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko made the statement in his speech at a session of the 7th Belarusian People’s Congress on 25 April, BelTA has learned.

Bearing in mind the level of military threats in the region, the head of state drew attention to the armed conflict in Ukraine. “The coalition of Western countries is deliberately protracting it,” Aleksandr Lukashenko stressed. “They have also converted Ukraine into a drug addict, who is kept on a short leash with promises of a new dose of additional weapons, including long-range weapons, and financial infusions.”

He reminded that creating a so-called mission for Ukraine with a dedicated budget of about $100 billion for a period of five years was suggested at a Brussels meeting of the ministers of foreign affairs of NATO countries in early April 2024. “Do you feel how Americans shift the financial burden onto Europe?” the president wondered. Donations for this project are supposed to be split in proportion to the gross domestic product of the NATO countries.

At the Belarusian People’s Congress session held on 24 April the president noted that the Ukrainian government had stooped to a deal with the West and now trades Ukrainian lives for weapons. “It is the deal I talked about yesterday. In other words, it is the payment for the ability to continue confrontation with the Russian Federation, for active sabotage and terrorist activities both in Russia’s regions that border on Ukraine and in the depth of the Russian territory,” he said.
