Polotsk celebrated its 1162nd anniversary solemnly and vividly

The birthday of ancient Polotsk united many significant dates both in the history of the city itself and in the history of the country. The celebrations started in the concert hall of St. Sophia Cathedral – the ceremony of awarding the title "Honorary Citizen of the Polotsk district" and awarding the badge "For Services to Polotsk" took place here. Igor Karpenko, Chairman of the Central Election Commission of Belarus, was awarded the title of "Honorary Citizen of the Polotsk region" for his significant personal contribution to the development of the region.

– I never thought that I, who was born in Siberia, would become an honorary citizen of the district, a city that is rightfully considered the cradle of Belarusian statehood, – said Igor Karpenko. – The history of Polotsk influenced the choice of my profession – I became a history teacher. The monographs and manuscripts that I have read, comprehension of the traditions laid down by my ancestors, have played an important role in my professional formation and development. This is where I graduated from school, and this is where my career began. I thank you for such a high appreciation of my work and I will make every effort to ensure that the Canvas flourishes and develops so that we can pass on the great legacy to future generations.

The names of the head of the design department of the capital construction department of the city Andrey Borovik – for his great personal contribution to the construction of facilities in the territory of the Polotsk district and the chief nurse of the central city polyclinic of the Central State Hospital Natalia Molyavko –for a significant personal contribution to improving the health of the population of the district are listed in the Book of Honor of the Polotsk district.

As part of the celebration of Independence Day and the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Polotsk and the whole of Belarus from the Nazi invaders, participants of the Vitebsk Regional Executive Committee ATC rally were met here, the final of the district project "Victorious Roads of the withering War" took place. A gift for the festive dates was the grand opening after the renovation of the main sports facility of the city – the Spartak stadium.

To the 100th anniversary of the Polotsk district in the park at the Mound of Immortality was also held opening of the embankment of the Western Dvina with observation decks. For residents of the agro-town of Zelenka, the long-awaited and joyful event was the launch ceremony of natural gas. Alexey Kushnarenko, a member of the Council of the Republic and General Director of Beltopgaz, came to share the moments of celebration with the villagers, Chairman of the Regional Council of Deputies Dmitry Demidov, deputy of the Regional Council of Deputies, Director General of Vitebsk Gas Alexander Brantsevich, Chairman of the Polotsk district Executive Committee Igor Markovich.

– The arrival of blue fuel for a rural resident actually means the beginning of a new life. This not only blurs the line between the village and the city in terms of communal comfort, but is also one of the most important benefits of life, creating prerequisites for improving the quality of life of people and modernizing production, Dmitry Demidov said.

Vseslav the Magician returned to Polotsk

In Polotsk, a mural with the image of the famous Prince Vseslav the Magician appeared on the facade of an apartment building on Marinenko Street, 26. It was created by Betera and the Urban Myths art community. The painting became part of the image campaign "You are the hero of the game".  Vseslav the Magician, who ruled the Principality of Polotsk in the XI century, is a legendary and multifaceted figure. Having survived exile and defeat, he always believed in success and went to his goal – built cities, temples, and defended his lands. It was he who began the construction of St. Sophia Cathedral, the pearl of Belarusian architecture and the center of spiritual culture for many centuries. The author of the sketch is Alexandra Prima. The facade of the house was painted by artists Sergey Rysakov and Evgeny Sosyura. It took them only 5 days to create the drawing.
